Life on a spider's thread
Small stories of great history.
The author follows the lives of several families from the 1930s to the 1970s and the events that affected their lives. He also notices the characters of the individual heroes.
The author follows the lives of several families, weddings, study, birth children, in short, ordinary human joys and worries... Sometimes the fates of individual characters intersect, sometimes they're further apart. The stories begin in the 1930s, when the Nuremberg Race Laws had just come into force, and follow the heroes into the 1970s, when other laws punish leaving Czechoslovakia. We get to know Eva, a half-Jewish girl who survived the war in a Catholic convent with great luck, but her German father had to be deported after the war, while another Jewish girl, Sara, has an even harder fate, her entire family was murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz. Jiří, an intelligent and principled student, is the only one in his class who does not come to graduate in the fifties wearing a Union shirt and does not sign a consent to "fraternal aid" in 1968. It is the Gestapo man Franz Schwarz who has no qualms about being principled, and his son František, whom he brought up in a similar spirit, will make life difficult for the heroes of the story even in the deep days of normalisation.
