Let's finish them off! (2nd edition)
When SS chief Himmler sent Hitler a report on the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, he included two bloodthirsty, vengeful sentences that became the title of this book. An incredible sixty-three days of heroic resistance cost the lives of two hundred thousand Warsaw residents. Nazi ferocity during the fighting and after the rebels' surrender turned the Polish metropolis into a sea of rubble.
One of the most tragic events of the twentieth century is still a living wound in Polish history, even after sixty-seven years. And also a sore spot on the conscience of the victors of World War II.
How was the insurgent Armija krajowa, the Home Army, born and where was it headed – the largest army ever prepared in conspiracy for open military action? Why did it strike on August 1st? How were the poorly armed " AK guys" able to withstand the overwhelming pressure of heavy weapons for so long? Why didn' t the Red Army – which was creating a valuable bridgehead for an attack on the west bank of the Vistula and further on to Berlin – come to their aid? Have the Western Allies exhausted all possibilities of putting pressure on Stalin in this matter? What were the further fates of the surviving insurgents in the oppressive grip of totalitarian tyranny?
For decades, honest Polish patriots fought for a true picture of the insurgent epic, for the honor that rightfully belongs to it. Even the Czech reader should know the whole truth in all its contexts.
