The magic of freedom, the wonderful Charleston era and the friendship of some extraordinary women
Fifteen-year-old Rosa embarks on a perilous journey across the Pyrenees as one of the "swallows", poor Spanish girls travelling once a year in search of work. In Mauléon, on the French side of the Basque Country, she is eager not only to find work as a seamstress for espadrilles in a local factory, but also to let a little adventure into her life.
But the decision to pursue freedom will come at a high price. She loses her sister during the dramatic journey and ends up completely abandoned in Mauléon. Soon, however, he meets "the ladies", three mysterious rich women living in the middle of the Basque countryside in a house full of books, music and champagne. Free, radiant, unrestrained. They immediately take Rosa in and offer her a home - with the only condition that she must have her own job.
Who exactly are the non-conforming, unclassifiable and so different Colette, Thérèse and Véra? What secrets are they hiding? Actually, the worldly ladies should never have crossed Rosa's path. And yet they changed her life.
