Lacquered screen

The legendary Judge Dee solves the mysterious scenes on a rare screen

While travelling, Judge Dee visits the home of his colleague Teng, where he discovers a rare lacquer screen decorated with motifs of the four seasons. When Teng's wife is found dead under circumstances strikingly similar to one of the scenes on the screen, rumours of supernatural forces begin to spread.
While searching for the killer, Judge Dee becomes entangled in several seemingly unrelated cases: from the suspicious death of the respected merchant Kao Chih-yüan to the disappearance of a young woman. Each new clue leads him deeper into a world of secrets, intrigue, forbidden passions, and carefully guarded lies. Can he uncover the truth before the mysterious case claims another victim?
This thrilling historical detective novel from the master of the genre, Robert van Gulik, brings another unforgettable story of the legendary Judge Dee, in which witty investigation is combined with the fascinating atmosphere of ancient China.

Robert van Gulik

Robert van Gulik (1910–1967) was born in the Netherlands but spent almost his entire life in the Far East. He was particularly fascinated by Chinese culture. In addition to his writing career, he also worked as a diplomat in countries such as Malaysia, Japan, and his beloved China. He incorporated his knowledge of China into his literary work, especially in the popular series of historical detective stories, the Judge Dee series, whose central protagonist is inspired by a real 7th-century figure. In his books, van Gulik combines Western detective logic, based on investigation and deduction, with traditional Chinese storytelling that weaves multiple stories together at once. Robert van Gulik was a true polyglot—in addition to several European languages, he was fluent in Chinese, Japanese, and Malay. For his academic interests, he studied Sanskrit and Tibetan. His love for China also carried over into his private life: he chose a gibbon as a pet and played the traditional Chinese stringed instrument, the guqin.
