Karel Poláček: District Town
The novel District Town is the first part of Poláček's unfinished pentalogy of the small-town saga. The story begins in a nostalgic time at the turn of the first decade of the century, when time was still eternal and fluid and the town slumbered in it like a horse in front of a barn. The family of the Jewish merchant Mr. Štědrý is the focal point from which the ironic narrator follows the bustle of small-town society with sharply drawn figures from its various strata. Poláček's District Town was first published in a sequel in Lidové noviny in 1936 and the first book edition appeared in bookstores in October of the same year. Prepared by and reads: Jan Vlasak.
