Josef Hlinomaz remembers

He was born into the family of the composer and teacher Václav Hlinomaz. He spent his youth in Dobříš and Příbram, where he studied at a real grammar school and played in theater as an amateur. He inherited his father' s significant artistic talents in music, acting, and visual arts. After graduating from high school, he first studied painting for two years at the School of Applied Arts, but after disagreements with the teachers there, he switched to studying acting at the drama department of the Prague Conservatory, which he graduated in 1940. He worked in various theaters, most recently at the ABC Theater. From 1958 until his death, he worked in the acting troupe of the Barrandov Film Studio. He is also known as a naive painter, where he often depicted subjects from the world of theater, variety shows, circuses, and art in general. His poetic surrealist paintings were very distinctive, characterized by a large dose of humor, poetry, and humorously tuned fantasy. In addition to naive painting, he also devoted himself to book illustrations. He also contributed his articles and columns to various newspapers and magazines.
