John Millington Synge: The Well of the Saints

This piercingly simple story from the Irish countryside is a parable of inner blindness and human folly. Water from a miraculous well briefly restores the sight of two blind husbands. They can finally compare reality with the ideas they have made about the world and themselves. Synge's source for the game was a story he heard about a miraculous well on the island of Inishmor, one of the three Aran Islands. At the beginning of the last century they were characterized by very peculiar inhabitants with specific customs and legends.
