Jiří Stránský: White Suite

White Suite is the title of one of the most famous short stories by the writer and former political prisoner Jiří Stránský. Surprisingly, he is not hiding in a luxury hotel, but the prisoners call the communist camp's morgue that. When one of them has a dream come true and finds himself in the "white suite" for a few days, he gets an unpleasant surprise. Jiří Stránský was sentenced to eight years in a fabricated trial - he spent those years in labour camps. There he learned the stories of men who were inconvenient to the communist authorities of the time, sentenced to many years of punishment. The stories from the collection Happiness take place in the environment of the 1950s camps and prisons, including The White Suite.
