Jaws

It's fast, it's silent – and it's a killer. A tense study of terror. Jaws is a gripping, thrilling, and brilliant reflection on the nature of humanity and stands as one of the most iconic thrillers ever written. The book was the basis for Steven Spielberg's famous film. The start of the summer season in the seaside resort of Amity is marred by the attack of a man-eating great white shark on a young girl. Police Chief Brody closes the beaches. However, his decision is overruled by the mayor and the town council, who fear the impact on summer tourism, the main source of income for the town of Amity. In cooperation with Harry Meadows, the editor of the local newspaper, the report of the attack is kept secret. In light of subsequent events and further shark attacks, Brody, together with ichthyologist Hooper and shark hunter Quint, sets out to sea to take on the animal killer. The novel grew out of Benchley's interest in shark attacks after reading about the adventures of Frank Mundus, a shark hunter from Montauk, New York, in 1964. After writing the novel "Jaws" in the early 1970s, Peter Benchley became actively involved with scientists and filmmakers, participating in many expeditions around the world over the following decades to expand knowledge of sharks and their behaviour. He encouraged each new generation of "Jaws" fans to enjoy his thrilling story and turn their enthusiasm into support and protection for these magnificent prehistoric apex predators.
