Jane Austen: Northanger Abbey

For a few weeks, Catherine, a seventeen-year-old country girl, is thrust into a big world she has only known in novels. The witty text parodies popular gothic novels of the time. Because the publisher rejected it at first, it was not published until a year after the author's death. The main character of the novel, Catherine, a 17-year-old girl, is temporarily transported to the spa town of Bath by family friends. This is the first time the young lady leaves the peaceful countryside. The unsentimentality, distance, irony or the ability to develop the plot and create viable dialogues are still disarming today. Thanks to them, Jane Austen is still one of the most read and best-known women writers. And not just in the British Isles.
