Jan Žižka

The biography of Jan Žižka was written in the intellectually explosive atmosphere of 1968, but it was not published until after the Soviet invasion. The most beneficial aspect of Žižek's biography is the way the author conceives of his personality. He is not a tolerant Utraquist, he does not recognize the coexistence of different truths or different approaches to the knowledge of God. < br> He acts and behaves in a straightforward manner. The learned faith should apply to everyone, to the last soldier as well as to the warlord. Žižka is above all a soldier who demands obedience and discipline. He severely punishes all deviations from the true faith. At the same time, however, he remains a nobleman who honours the God-given ordering of the world into social estates and orders. On the political level, however, Žižka was not such a radical as in matters of faith. He knew very well that he had to compromise and accommodate the differing views of allied parties. < br> He may have longed for the unification of the country, for an order that would correspond to his ideas, but at the same time he was aware of the actual unattainability of this goal. In this he probably differed from Jan Hus, with whom, on the contrary, he was united by a limited tolerance of the opinions of others.
