Jan Nepomuk Stepanek: Czech and German

The name of Jan Nepomuk Štěpánek has unjustly fallen into oblivion. Yet it was he who premiered many of Shakespeare's and Moliere's plays in the Czech Republic. Štěpánek was also the first Czech to head the Estates Theatre, and he was also a very prolific playwright. The story of one of his most popular plays, the farce The Czech and the German, benefits from the brawling of two nationalities whose coexistence was often not without conflict.
