Did Adalrik help a prisoner escape from a column of Austrian prisoners of war?
One of the heavily guarded prisoners escapes from a column of Austrian prisoners of war while passing through the Landstejn Land Gate. The circumstances of his escape are so unusual that one of the commanders of the castle garrison, Adalric of Sichelbach, faces the suspicion that he deliberately allowed the enemy to escape. The very next day, two more people disappear from the convoy. The confusing situation is then complicated by the unexpected discovery of the corpse of an unknown gunman near the settlement of Pomezí.
A chain of seemingly unrelated incidents culminates in a surprise attack by the Austrian army, which manages to pass undetected through the border forest. The overwhelmed Landstein garrison is desperately defending itself against a much more numerous enemy, and the hope of summoning outside help is almost vanishingly slim. The bleak outlook is further underlined by the reasonable suspicion that there may be a traitor among the crew who is in league with the enemy.
Will the Landstein soldiers manage to solve the predicament? And will Adalrik succeed in clearing his name?
