In memoriam

War is hell. And so is love. The year is 1914, and the world is torn apart by war. For Henry Gaunt, Sidney Ellwood and the other students at a prestigious boarding school in the English countryside, the violence of the front seems far away. Gaunt, who is half-German, is preoccupied with his own private battle—a consuming infatuation with his best friend, the charming Ellwood—unaware that Ellwood longs for him too. As anti-German sentiment grows in England, Gaunt’s family advises him to enlist, which he does willingly, primarily as an escape from his torturous feelings for Ellwood.

But soon Ellwood and other classmates arrive at the front as well.

This tense and moving story about the tragedy of war, but also about growing up, lost innocence and the struggle to overcome the fear of being oneself, will captivate you with its brilliantly drawn characters and powerful dialogues.
