I was number 30529
After the war, Felix Weinberg, in order to be able to move on at all, decided to repress his memories and not look back. Few would believe that the renowned scientist and university professor of physics went through the hell of concentration camps as a teenage boy and survived the death march. After sixty-five years he decided to write his story, but he did so with unexpected insight. It was the only way he could return to the events that had deprived him of his beloved mother, his little brother and all his other relatives. Only his father remained, who had been stranded in England before the occupation of Czechoslovakia. Together they eventually built a new life there.
I had a very happy childhood. It ended too soon and too cruelly because of Adolf Hitler, but I believe that it is childhood that matters most. Memories of him create in the mind a kind of shell of safety and joy into which one can withdraw in times of suffering. My shell was full of beautiful memories and the certainty that my loved ones adored and loved me.
