How long to sleep when orchids bloom
Marie Škrdlíková is an extraordinary natural phenomenon. Her stories smell of soil, roots, stems, leaves and flowers and grow into a meadow where the shadows of clouds wander. Here we have to lie down and be children again, so that we can smell all the smells, hear all the sounds. Through images of the fragile world and its edges, we return to childhood and adolescence, among characters brimming with life and in the face of difficult circumstances. We look at the sky through blades of grass, whistling on our fingers and listening to stories about where we belong, who we are and what we are losing in masterful short stories written with poetic acuity and great observational talent, in precise language, that's really childlike, but not at all childish.
