Hana
Hana – the third novel from a successful Czech author
If there is one thing that tests the true nature of human life, it is suffering. And if there is one thing that devalues life, it is the suffering that people inflict on others. But what if they are innocent nonetheless? What if it is all just a coincidence, and a person is merely a helpless instrument of fate?
It is the winter of 1954, and nine-year-old Mira, against her parents' orders, goes to the river to ride on the ice floes. She falls into the water, her disobedience is revealed, and her punishment is to miss out on dessert at a family celebration. However, this innocent childhood incident marks a fundamental turning point in Mira's life. A tragedy follows, tying her for many years to her taciturn and depressive Aunt Hana and uncovering a troubled family history that will continue to drift along the current of her life like an ice floe.
Alena Mornštajnová tells this story, based on real events, at a gripping pace and with a flair for the dramatic, making the reader feel as if they are watching a suspenseful film. The only question that remains is whether the ice floe of fate will eventually melt…

"A beautiful book. Well written, one of the few contemporary Czech authors who is a good read, and for me, Mrs Morštajnová is a real writer. I also appreciate that the plot of the novel is well-developed; simply put, she is not an author who publishes a book every month. And with Hana, the work put into the book is evident."

"That was incredibly written. What a person carries within them throughout their life without anyone knowing or suspecting. The author skilfully wove the main plotlines of the story together for a climactic ending. One of the books I won't forget for a long time. And it was written by a Czech author."
