Gulliver's Travels
Has society changed for the better since Jonathan Swift?
The famous utopian novel, under the guise of an apparent travelogue, depicts the conditions in 18th century England, criticizes the state of civilization and relativizes the power of human reason.
The famous utopian novel, under the guise of an apparent travelogue, describes the conditions in 18th century England, criticises the state of civilisation and relativises the power of human reason. While the recounting of Gulliver's adventures is more than believable, the narrative is a marvelous fiction - from the fictional publisher's foreword to the title character's letter to the good man to the visits to the utopian islands. In his imaginary travels, Gulliver visits dwarves and giants, discovers the floating island of Laputa and the economically and culturally declining state of Balnibardi, and his attention does not escape the Yahus, who serve the noble animals - horses - in the ideal realm. Gulliver returns home after a long period of travelling and looking around the world, but realises that there is something shaky in the English homeland. And not just in English... And not just then...
