Grid in Paradise
Few subjects are talked about as much today as Muslims in Europe—but usually in the context of topics like terrorism, integration, and the challenges of coexistence. Muslim women, on the other hand, are rarely discussed. And when they are, their image is often reduced to that of the “oppressed housewife”. In her new book, Magdaléna Frouzová presents the stories of women who were born or have spent part of their lives in Europe. She reveals the diversity of their lifestyles, worldviews, levels of integration, and attitudes towards Europe, showing that it is impossible to consider them a homogeneous group. At the same time, she pieces together a mosaic of the mentalities and cultures of European nations. Among others, a famous fashion designer from Great Britain, a senator from Belgium, a victim of female genital mutilation from Austria, an elderly woman who dedicated her entire life in Germany to fighting for her homeland, the girlfriend of one of the 9/11 attackers, a Muslim woman married to a Czech man, a Muslim feminist, and a victim of forced marriage all speak about their lives as “Muslim women in Europe”. The authors also include Petra Procházková, Amel Boubekeur, and Imtaz Khaliq.
