Goldstein

Decadent Berlin in 1931 in Volker Kutscher's new gripping crime noir Goldstein

Berlin 1931. A power struggle is underway in the Berlin underworld. The economic crisis, the violent clashes between the SA and the Red Front, the power struggle of the Berlin gangs. Gereon Rath is given a special assignment to track down American gangster Abraham Goldstein. But little does he know that his collegial assistance to the US Bureau of Investigation will soon become a deadly race. While he is bored at his post at the Excelsior Hotel, the armed Goldstein has long been moving freely around the city. When underworld boss Marlow forces Rath into another private investigation, the Commissioner finds himself in the middle of a gang war.
Meanwhile, Charly Ritter is starting a pre-law practice, and after she lets a young homeless woman caught on a train without a ticket escape from her office, her search meets Gereon's.
Tensions in the city escalate and soon two worlds collide in Berlin: the empire of American gangsters and the expanding power of Nazism...

Die Welt Online

"Kutscher has perfectly described the decadence of the Weimar Republic, with blood in the streets of Berlin and Nazis lurking menacingly."

Sunday Times

"Kutscher's trick is brilliant ... He has created a portrait of an era through the optics of genre fiction."

"A fascinating novel and a truly horrible history."
