Glorious times
An allegory of dictatorship and animal revolution in the heart of a fictional Zimbabwe
The novel Glory by Zimbabwean writer NoViolet Bulawayo is an allegory of dictator Robert Mugabe's regime. It also openly references Orwell's Animal Farm, so individual political figures and social groups are depicted as representatives of the animal kingdom. The story takes place in a fictional country called Jidada, which, however, shares many historical and political events with Zimbabwe.
Winner of the "Litera for a Translated Book" award in 2026.
