Ghost Island
Writer Mercer Mann is marrying her boyfriend, Thomas, on the beach. The couple are wed by Bruce Cable, the well-known owner of Bay Books bookshop. After the ceremony, Bruce tells Mercer, who is searching for a subject for her next novel, that he has come across an incredible story. It concerns a narrow strip of a barrier island off the north coast of Florida. Three hundred years ago, it was settled by freed slaves, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last of them was forced to leave. That person is the now-elderly Lovely Jackson, who deeply loves her birthplace and its remarkable history. But now, a ruthless development giant is after this land, wanting to build a resort and casino. However, Lovely knows the island rightfully belongs to her. Together with Lovely, Mercer embarks on a difficult battle. They will take on a powerful corporation, its lawyers, lobbyists, and influential politicians. What's more, Lovely knows something that could fundamentally thwart the developers' plans: the island is cursed. For almost an entire century, it has remained uninhabited for very good and very disturbing reasons.
