German Grammar Workbook with a Sense of Humour

This handbook (consisting of 3 volumes) is intended for those who want to try something unconventional and combine business with pleasure: to revise the most important challenges of German grammar while, if possible, having fun. It offers a collection of German anecdotes arranged according to grammatical phenomena. Each anecdote is accompanied by a mini German-Czech dictionary to aid comprehension.

If the reader-student occasionally smiles while reading the anecdotes, or even laughs out loud, one of the main goals of the exercise book will have been achieved. Laughter is simply pleasant. The reader need not be aware that laughter is also healthy.

This handbook is an exercise book, so it aims to practise something that has already been understood at least in broad terms. Before starting each new chapter, it is recommended to brush up on the given grammatical phenomenon from commonly available German grammar overviews. With the help of the short texts of the anecdotes, the reader-student revises these phenomena, becoming aware of their structure and use. The anecdotes provide natural, short contexts for these phenomena.

The exercise book is grouped into individual volumes according to grammatical phenomena. The given phenomenon occurs at least once in each anecdote, always marked in bold.

The first volume focuses on verbs and nouns.

The second volume focuses on other parts of speech and phraseology.

The third volume focuses primarily on syntax (main and subordinate clauses, word order, etc.) and word formation.
