From the House of the Dead

Notes from the House of the Dead is a semi-autobiographical novel written by Dostoevsky after his time in the Omsk fortress, where he was imprisoned from 1850 to 1854. The isolation and inhospitable prison conditions, besides being inhumane, also bring about unexpected situations and reveal the deepest corners of the human soul.
The text has been digitised from the 1934 translation by Petr Tvrdý and has undergone grammatical and stylistic revisions.
