Frida

The story of Frida is a touching tale of longing, longing and loss.

The book is translated by Kateřina Krištůfková with the kind financial support of the Norwegian NORLA Foundation.

Frida Grünfeld first appeared in police records in the spring of 1931. She was Jewish, a prostitute and suspected of espionage – and pregnant. Her son Berthold later became a refugee in Norway, where he eventually settled, studied medicine and became a well-known psychiatrist. But what happened next with Frida?

Nina F. Grünfeld embarks on a journey into the past in search of her grandmother's fate. She finds small clues and scraps of information in interrogation reports, court records and other archival material, and watches as the net around her grandmother tightens more and more. The authorities were after women like Frida. Then the Nazis came to power.
