Two historical novels, Death on the Tongue and To the Heights of the Imperial Throne, are published under the same title.
This time, too, we meet the Dominican Paul, the mysterious agent of Charles IV, as a mover of historical events.
The first novel begins with the arrival of the fugitive Roman tribune Coly di Rienzo, who wants to win Charles IV. to promote the intended restoration of the glory of Rome and the unification of Italy. The Roman and Bohemian king is tempted by the idea and decides to go incognito with only a few guides to Italy to take part in a knightly tournament.
The second novel takes us to the year 1354, when Charles IV. to cap his political career by winning the imperial crown. But it doesn't go as smoothly as he originally imagined.
