Film – our ally

This collective monograph summarises the research findings of students from the Department of Film and AV Culture at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno, focusing on Czech short films of the 1950s. The studies, which concentrate on specific areas such as industrial, agricultural, military, sports, cultural, and other types of films, analyse the cultural-political and economic conditions under which this type of work was created. They also examine its thematic connection to the demands of its commissioners (primarily the state) and its relationship with other media that the commissioning institutions used to disseminate the same type of message. In addition to context, the rhetorical and stylistic levels of individual films are also analysed. Two of the texts focus on specific distribution channels through which short films were released: the Film Popular University and Čas cinemas. Among other things, these individual texts demonstrate that despite the programmatic and planned nature of the work, the commissioners' cultural-political intentions were often not implemented in practice as expected. The studies assess the ideological, economic, and entertainment potential of the short film, showing which of these aspects prevailed in various cases and, consequently, the extent to which films intended as useful servants were genuinely useful.
