What is Russia lacking above all? Humanist reform, emphasis on simple human decency. And this innovative approach must apply to all: even senior officials should force themselves to see their subordinates as human beings. State Councilor Ilya Ilyich Pralinsky feels called upon to set a personal example of such desirable behavior. So he decides to attend the wedding of one of the lowest officials in his office unannounced. However, his attempt at an unprepossessing display of humanity and simplicity has a completely unexpected outcome. It seems that some social boundaries cannot be crossed without consequences? The short story The Unpleasant Incident was dramatised for radio by Anna Smetanová, in 1979 it was staged by director Vladimír Tomeš, who cast Vladimir Brabec (Pralinsky) in the lead role, Ladislav Potměšil (clerk of Pseldonymov), Tatiana Medvecka (newlywed), Miloš Nedbal (Štěpán Nikiforov), Antonia Hegerlíková (Pseldonymov's mother) and many other excellent actors.
