A novel inspired by true events from the author of Podbrdské ženy
This novel is inspired by the true story of Eugenie Egertová Janečková and the Hotel Continental in Pilsen, a meeting place for high society during the First Republic.
Like most women of her time, Eugenie faces an arranged marriage. The charming brunette marries the hotelier Ledecký, locking her true feelings away in her heart. Together, they manage the hotel as history unfolds around them. On the eve of the occupation, Marlene Dietrich stays the night; later, both the Gestapo and resistance fighters come for coffee. At the end of the war, a bomb hits the hotel, killing Eugenie's husband and father in the shelter.
The liberation by the American army brings new hope and love into the young hotelier's life, forcing her to make a fateful decision.
