Ethics in paediatrics and neonatology
Within the context of the European philosophical tradition, this publication offers guidance on important topics in both related fields. The publication is dedicated to the connection between philosophy (ethics), law, and scientific knowledge with the clinical practice of paediatrics and neonatology.
The general chapters define the fundamental principles of bioethics, basic concepts, and branches of ethics. Selected practical chapters address clinical and psychosocial questions in paediatrics and neonatology. A large part of the book's practical section is devoted to the ethics of palliative care in childhood and neonatology. It reflects on the limits of viability, intensive, developmental, and follow-up care in neonatology, and addresses issues of pain, dying, and the (non-)initiation and withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. It also includes supporting the family of a child with a life-limiting diagnosis, during the terminal phase of the illness, and at the end of life. Seemingly peripheral areas are also mentioned, such as the ethics of research, psychology, genetics, childhood nutrition, the right to breastfeeding, and nutrition with mother's milk. It also mentions the legal and ethical issues of baby boxes, surrogate motherhood, elective caesarean sections, and vaccination issues. Attention is also given to adolescents.
An extensive section is then devoted to ethical and legal contexts. Topics include the concept of the child's best interests, the protection of children's rights, substitute decision-making, informed consent in paediatrics, and the ethical implications of caring for children from different cultural backgrounds, as well as the influence of the media on shaping a child's health. A separate chapter is dedicated to teamwork.
The monograph is intended for healthcare professionals (doctors and nurses) in the fields of paediatrics, neonatology, and palliative care. It may also be beneficial for students aiming for a career in paediatrics, and for carers at the health-social interface in paediatrics.
