Egon Hostovský: Seven times in the lead role

Hostovský's novel Seven Times in the Leading Role, first published in 1942 in American exile, is one of the first to name the guilt of European intellectuals who did not clearly oppose the rise of fascism. The great English writer Graham Greene said of this work: "This novel is a supremely interesting example of metaphysical literary creation applied to a political subject. I know of no finer description of the ghostly atmosphere of the Europe of the 1930s, which culminated in the general St. Bartholomew's night of wars. "
