Dyslexia
Can you think of one day in recent memory when you didn't read anything at all? Reading has become an integral part of the modern information society and is a lifelong skill. Yet for about ten percent of the population, it means a problem that is referred to as a specific learning disability – dyslexia.
The publication introduces readers to this issue throughout the development of the individual – from warning signs in pre-school to specific adult difficulties, which are often a combination of dyslexia and secondarily developed psychosocial difficulties.
The first chapters of the book focus on the process of reading, the complications that can arise during the process, and what these difficulties stem from and how to identify them. Readers will become familiar with the latest domestic and international research studies in the field of neuroscience, educational psychology and special education that clarify the etiology and symptoms of dyslexia.
The second half of the publication offers a wide range of diagnostic and interventional procedures for all age categories, which are currently used by domestic and foreign professional institutions. It emphasizes research-proven practices that ensure comprehensive cognitive development.
The purpose of this part of the book is purely practical: to show how theoretical knowledge can be applied to contemporary practice. If there are deviations from normal reading mastery, we must ask what other ways of working with information the individual can use. Therefore, in addition to training the weaknesses that stem from dyslexia, the interventions focus on using the strengths of the individual and developing their potential.
The book is intended primarily for counsellors (psychologists and special educators), primary and secondary school teachers and university students of all these disciplines.
