Dragon Republic

The sequel to the successful novel The Poppy War — an epic fantasy inspired by Chinese history.

One war has ended. Another is about to begin.

The Nikan Empire has fought for its survival three times in the bloody Poppy Wars. Although the third has just ended, the shaman and warrior Rin cannot forget the atrocity she committed to save her people. Now she is on the run from her guilt, her tightening opium addiction, and the murderous commands of the fiery Phoenix, a vengeful god who has gifted her with terrifying power.

She doesn't want to live, but she refuses to die until she has killed the treacherous Empress who sold her homeland to its enemies. Rin's only hope is to join forces with the powerful Dragon Warlord, who plans to conquer Nikan, depose the Empress, and establish a new republic. But the Empress and the Dragon Warlord are not what they seem, and Rin increasingly fears that her love for Nikan will once again force her to unleash the Phoenix's deadly power. For there is nothing she would not sacrifice to save her country... and to get her revenge.

Kuang’s continuation of her military fantasy, The Poppy War, is a stunning, sophisticated sequel.
