Disturbance
After a session with a psychiatrist she's never seen before, eighteen-year-old Susanna is sent to McLean Psychiatric Hospital to be treated for depression. She spends the next two years on the ward for adolescent girls, chronicling the stories of the individual girls and her own experiences against the backdrop of the turbulent 1960s. With humour, hyperbole, but also with a chillingly critical look at the impersonal regime of a psychiatric hospital, she contemplates what is normal and what is a sign of madness, what constitutes a mental illness, and what is the path to recovery?
The book was adapted into a film starring Winona Ryder in the lead role and Angelina Jolie in a supporting role.
