Distillery Daughter
North Carolina, the 1960s. For generations, the Sassers have been making moonshine in the mountains of Wilkes County. Their history is recorded in a leather-bound book owned by Jessie’s father, but Jessie wants nothing to do with it. She believes that moonshine was the reason for her mother’s death twelve years ago.
Her father refuses to talk about her mother or the day she died. But Jessie is consumed by a thirst for the truth – a thirst that drives her to seek comfort in food. Yet the more she hurts herself, the more the “monster,” as the tough but compassionate school nurse calls her troubles, grows inside her.
Defying her father, who claims that she too has moonshining in her blood, Jessie decides to destroy the stills and blame it on their rivals. But her plan only reignites old feuds and unearths unforgiven wrongs. As she tries to right old and new mistakes, Jessie makes unexpected discoveries about her family, herself, and the legacy that might finally provide the answers she has been searching for.
