Disconnected States

Expanded, updated edition of the successful title

The second edition is expanded to include a chapter that provides a look at the dramatic end of President Donald Trump's term in office.
Many people think they know America, but few people know that not many Americans have fully experienced it in their lifetime. An experiment that has been going on for two and a half centuries fascinates the rest of the world.
Almost every night for five years, Martin Řezníček has tried to bring viewers closer to the changes the country is undergoing, which are perhaps the most profound in several decades. In Manhattan, he advised Henry Kissinger on his choice of tie before an interview about Václav Havel. In Texas, he spent a week in the mud and rain during the hurricane with people who had lost everything except hope that things would get better.
From behind the scenes of Congress, he reported on tests of the strength of American democracy, from Silicon Valley on unprecedented technological dominance. From Baltimore during the race riots, he reported on how a society based on rules and laws can turn into total anarchy with violence and looting in a single afternoon.
The book brings together the colourful stories that together make up American exceptionalism. In some places it refutes, in others it confirms the stereotypes we have about the USA - through people with Czech roots, but also those who have never heard of the Czech Republic. All at a time of key tectonic shifts symbolized by Presidents Obama and Trump.

They wrote about the book

Elegant, always meticulously prepared and with a bulldog move on the journalistic goal hidden behind a nice smile, TV heavyweight Martin Řezníček plunges into the world of literature. His American glasses you'll want to put on.

Jakub Szántó

Řezníček's colleague Michal Kubal stressed in his preface that a good book must have an interesting story and a good narrator. The Disunited States has both, which makes it readable and interesting even for those who are not normally very interested in American realities.

Jan Šída, novinky.cz

It is obvious and at the same time very commendable that Řezníček avoids stigmatizing his opponent like the devil without trying to understand him.

Hana Ulmanová, ceskapozice. lidovky.cz

If Czech reporters are sometimes condemned for not being able to come up with topics as worldly as the authors of the Polish school of reportage, then in the mentioned chapter [on Bohdan Pomahač and Carmen Tarleton] we can perhaps find one of the counter-arguments.
