Diary of a legionary in Russia

The memoirs of officer František Pokorný from 1912–1920 allow us to see the turmoil in Europe and Russia at that time through the eyes of a perceptive contemporary. The World War took him from the school staffroom to the Eastern Front and into the Czechoslovak Legions in Russia. In their ranks, he had to fight his way home – almost literally around the world. In his notes and photographs, we find not just a reflection of war and politics. The legionary also took notice of distant lands and the daily lives of his fellow soldiers.
