Deer Peak
East Bohemia at the end of the 16th century
The widow of his younger brother William arrives from France to the castle where Jan - the last descendant of the Lords of Zhora - lives. The brothers had been very close since childhood, but the split between them occurs only when William decides to go to France to support King Henry IV. Navarsky. He marries in France, despite his brother's disapproval, and shortly afterwards finds death on the battlefield. John suffers from remorse because he broke up with his brother in a bad way. In addition, he has financial problems, as the expenses of the war campaign and William's unexpected marriage put a heavy strain on the family coffers. The arrival of the widow, who intends to claim her inheritance, will exacerbate the tense situation.
The snow-covered landscape at the "end of the world" is a punishment in itself for the young Frenchwoman. She had hoped to find a new home here, but has encountered only coldness and rejection. Even the servants sense the mood of the estate and behave hostile to it. Soon after her arrival, someone tries to poison her. The only protector of the widow is Vilém's lawyer, Václav Lešický, who is trying to find the culprit. When the plague breaks out in the region, William's numerous relatives seek refuge in the castle. There are strained relations between the family members and the forced cohabitation under the same roof brings more problems. It's not just property that's at stake anymore, it's lives...
