Dead at St. Anne's
In the depths of a freezing Yorkshire winter, a reverend is found beaten to death…
Reverend Clare Wilcox has been found in her own church, St Anne's in Knaresborough, Yorkshire, beaten to death. No murder weapon was found at the scene, so people are quick to let their imaginations run wild and blame the ghost of a medieval monk who, according to local legend, haunts the church.
However, Detective Jim Oldroyd is trying to find a better suspect than a centuries-dead monk. He and his assistant, Sergeant Andy Carter, begin searching for any clue, but at every turn, the case is hampered by deepening snow and the threat of the supernatural.
Has Oldroyd really found himself in the middle of a ghost story, or is there a killer of flesh and blood hiding in plain sight? Ghost or not, the case soon becomes personal for Oldroyd…
J. R. Ellis
J. R. Ellis comes from a working-class family, but that didn't stop him from graduating from Oxford University and becoming a teacher. He has always been interested in mysteries, the supernatural, and unsolved crimes, and even during his teaching years, he wrote children's plays and ghost stories. However, it wasn't until his retirement that he began to devote himself fully to writing. His Yorkshire Murder Mystery series is intrinsically linked to the county where Ellis lives. He was inspired by the locked-room mystery style of detectives Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr, and even the series Jonathan Creek. He believes that for detective novels, it's not just who committed the crime that's important, but also how they did it. Although he writes about murder, he avoids overly brutal scenes, preferring to emphasise a light style, elements of humour, and a well-thought-out plot.
