Czech Sea: a new perspective on cultural history
The Czech sea has been a European literary theme traversing genres, eras, and linguistic regions since Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. Macl's book not only presents its various occurrences, but also revises Czech cultural history from the perspective of seas and oceans, influenced by the blue humanities. The studied corpus of texts thus expands to include reflections on prehistoric seas, colonial fantasies, travelogues, sailors' memoirs, and exile poetry, proving that the boundary between land and sea is not nearly as steadfast as maps depict, but runs through our very bodies. The Czech sea opens up before us as a question of life on an unpredictable blue planet.
