Czech in aphasia: theory and empirics
The monograph " Czech in Aphasia: theory and empirics" deals with questions at the border of linguistic aphasia, psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics. It is the first original monograph focused on empirical research of native speakers of Czech with aphasia, which does not leave aside the discussion of pressing theoretical issues. < br> The theoretical part introduces the reader to the issues of aphasia against the background of current approaches of cognitive science and deals with the history of research on aphasic disorders and their typology. It also introduces psycholinguistic models of speech production and comprehension, explains the concept of agrammatism and gives an overview of basic neuroimaging methods. < br> The empirical part is devoted to the research of Czech aphatic speakers. The author presents a set of eight experimental studies, which examine speech production and comprehension (tasks focusing on noun and verb naming, connecting words with pictures, semantic categorization of nouns, categorization of verbs by valence, actual sentence structure). He also mentions the pitfalls that the experimenter encounters when conducting research. Although the primary language studied is the Czech of native speakers, the book also outlines the problems of other languages. The results of all the experiments are correlated in the final discussion. < br> The monograph can be useful not only for readers interested in linguistics and psychology, but also in speech therapy and neuroscience.
