Czech foreign women
The stories of women who live abroad for a long time and bring the cultural differences in their country to life.
This literary documentary by journalist Jana LeBlanc and photographer Patricia Krivanek charts the lives of Czech women who have a home in a different country than the one they were born in. Through eleven fictionalized authentic testimonies, it shows the different experiences of living in foreign countries.
Each story tries to break down the preconceptions we have about countries or life abroad and relativise the clichés we associate with them. Is everything really possible in the USA, even for a single mother? What if a Muslim woman doesn't have to be a head-to-toe veiled woman, but a tattooed girl in a tank top? Is it possible to get a job abroad without knowing a single word of a foreign language? Will parents ruin a child's life if their parents take away their home, culture and everything they live by when they are teenagers?
The book is an ambitious international project providing authentic insight into the extraordinary lives and curiosities of different countries across the globe.
Jana LeBlanc
Jana LeBlanc is a Czech author, former journalist, copywriter and a woman with many interests and therefore little time. In the last twelve years she has lived on four continents in four countries. She got the idea for this book in the USA, where she was intrigued by the moving stories of Czech women living overseas. She wrote the book in Turkey, and especially in Malaysia, where she became even more deeply interested in the stereotypes and prejudices with which we approach other countries, cultures and people. She then shared her observations with photographer Patricia Krivanek, who is behind the visual part of the project. In 2018, she published My Baby America, a personal story about adapting to a new and different culture in the US. He writes a blog, www.comiudelaloradost.cz, which is read by 20,000 people every month.
