In the midst of a lavish celebration at Šternberk Castle, the beautiful Elška, wife of Drslav, Purgrave of Vever, disappears. But her husband seeks out Oldrich of Chlum and with tears in his eyes begs him for help. He believes his wife was kidnapped. He hopes that some powerful potentate will notice him and he will be able to serve his country in other ways than just copying official documents. His opportunity comes when the young royal son Přemysl Otakar II. loses a valuable object from his private chamber and the dean of the St. Vitus chapter entrusts Oldrich of Chlum with finding it.
