Cornelia's War
The love novel Cornelia's War takes place mostly during the occupation. His heroine, a young country woman named Kornelie Hajná, does not have an easy life. Her husband, an ardent communist, left her at the beginning of the war and she was left on her own. On the children and on the farm, vulnerable and exposed to the prying eyes of the neighbours and the all-encompassing fear of the German occupiers. Hatred towards them and coincidence cause the heroine to get involved in some way in helping the persecuted and risk her life. Her fears are heightened when an officer from the German occupation garrison begins to court her... The thrilling narrative is brought to the threshold of the 1950s, when the new builders of happy tomorrows come into full play and the heroine must make another fateful decision. The author combines a powerful love story with a compelling portrayal of the socio-historical circumstances of the time. It can be read as an example of how big history mixes the fates of "small" heroes. But also as a story of people who defy fate and whose individual lives are worth more than various impersonal ideologies.
