Life in a time-lapse - Open interview with daughter Hana
Helena Třeštíková talks in an open and intimate interview with her daughter Hana about her childhood and adolescence, her professional life and the heroes of her documentary films.
In seven chapters, each corresponding to approximately one decade of her life, we learn, among other things, about how she experienced the Prague Spring and why she never emigrated, how she met her husband Michael Třeštík, and her first attempts at time-lapse filmmaking. They then focus in detail on the beginnings of famous films such as Marriage Etudes and René, but also on new themes of the post-revolutionary years. Other important documentaries such as Marcela, Katka, Mallory or Private Universe will not be forgotten.
The entire interview was originally created as a video podcast from Helen's office. Hana had the opportunity to ask about everything she had always been interested in as a daughter, and she was not afraid to ask questions that journalists are shy to ask. The book brings a unique account of a renowned Czech documentary filmmaker, including many previously unpublished information from both her private and professional life.
Hana Třeštíková
(* 1982) is a film producer, director and municipal politician. After years spent producing commercials, films and festivals, she founded her own production company, Produkce Třeštíková, where she introduced several successful documentaries such as Šmejdi, Občan K. or goodbye, kid. She and her mother have made films about Lída Baar called The Destruction of Beauty, a portrait of the theater director Jakub Špalek called Life with Kašpar, and a portrait of the Romani activist and musician Vojta Lavička: Up and down. She herself then directed a sequel to the successful series Marriage Etudes: The new generation. In 2014, she became the Councillor for Culture of the Prague 7 municipal district, and in 2018-2023 she was the Councillor for Culture of the City of Prague. He is still active in municipal politics today. Currently, she enjoys going to theatres, exhibitions, concerts and reading books, which she reports on her social media in the form of cultural tips. He and his brother Tomas, a renowned photographer, record the podcast Třeštění, where they invite interesting personalities.
Helena Třeštíková
(* 1949) is a documentary filmmaker recognized in the Czech Republic and worldwide. It became famous especially for the so-called. time-lapse method of filming, following its protagonist for many years. Her leading films include the series Marriage Etudes, the portrait of the thief Rene, and the story of the drug addict Katka. In addition to time-lapse films, she also made a number of portraits, such as Forman vs. Forman about Miloš Forman or The Destruction of Beauty about Lída Baar. He is currently preparing the completion of a time-lapse portrait of the singer Bára Basiková. In the nineties and noughties she also worked on the series Memory of the 20th Century, which included the films Hitler, Stalin and Me, Unshared about the family camp in Auschwitz and People, I Love You! about Julius Fucik. She is the winner of the Czech Lion Award for the film Katka, the "European Oscar" for the film René, and an officer of the French Order of Arts and Culture. He teaches at the Department of Documentary at FAMU in Prague. She lives in Prague with her husband, writer Michael Třeštík. He has a daughter Hana and a son Tomáš.
