Conqueror

A historical novel about the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortés, who in 1519, in the service of King Charles V of Spain, arrived with 11 ships on the shores of Mexico and gradually conquered it. He seized the coast, penetrated the interior, subjugated the native tribes, captured the Mexican emperor, colonised the country, and was appointed viceroy of Mexico, only to be later stripped of his office and fortune. During the war and occupation, the author draws on material from 'History of the Conquest of Mexico', the work of American historian William Prescott.
