Charles IV. Revolt of the Dukes
Matouš Rozoumek, once a courtier of John of Luxembourg, stumbles upon the traces of a planned revolt of the dukes aimed at deposing Charles IV. from the throne of the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire. The conspirators are aided by the crop failure and the resulting famine, as well as by Charles's private problems - the death of his first-born son, his second wife and his untreated injuries. Matthew's son, the commander of the king's personal retinue, also finds his life complicated when he discovers that Barbara has been unfaithful to him. How will the two Karls cope in difficult situations? Will the king find a way to break the unity of the conspirators without having to intervene militarily against them?
