Part 3 of the crime series about detective Harry Hole
Harry Hole first searches for a high-end rifle intended for an assassination and then for the murderer of a war veteran. While clues lead into the past and the pieces of the story begin to fit together, the killer sets the stage for his final exit.
The year is 1944. In the trenches near Leningrad on the Eastern Front, a unit of Norwegian soldiers in German uniforms fights for a cause they believe in: for a free Norway. The soldiers come from all walks of life, they do not share political views or reasons for their participation in the fighting. The bravest of them, Daniel Gudeson, is shot and his body is placed in a mass grave. After a while, however, a wounded soldier appears in a Vienna hospital, claiming to be Daniel Gudeson. A man falls in love with nurse Helena. When a soldier is called up by the Wehrmacht to certain death on the southeastern front, the lovers plan a joint escape.
And here we are in 1999. An old man takes to the streets of Oslo, having just been given a death sentence by his doctor. The old man thinks about war. He knows he has one more mission before he dies. A former Norwegian soldier from the Eastern Front is soon found with his throat cut. At the same time, Harry Hole accidentally shoots an American Secret Service agent during President Bill Clinton' s visit to Norway. To his surprise, Harry is promoted to High Commissioner and transferred to the Norwegian Secret Service. However, it turns out that he was thus removed to an office where completely boring and insignificant cases await him, such as investigating the activities of a gang operating an illegal arms trade that is linked to the neo-Nazi environment. However, Harry and his partner Ellen Gjelten manage to discover that the arms smugglers' trail leads all the way to the ranks of the Oslo police. An insignificant case is no longer insignificant and a carousel of events begins to spin.
" It perfectly combines the suspense of a detective story and a classic love story, adding something from a war novel and a spy thriller. (. ) It lacks a bit of tension and chilling horror, it doesn' t surpass The Snowman or The Red Leopard, but it' s still a very decent crime film. "
- MF Dnes rating: 78 %" Červenka touches on the traumatic Norwegian experience of World War II – and skillfully connects Harry' s clash with corruption within the police force (which will also be his driving force in the next two books – Nemesis and Pentagram) to this line. Nesbo thus creates another of his fateful dramas. His hero desperately fights crime and his own demons, but he knows full well that oil has been spilled somewhere long ago. In any case, an absolute must for fans of the author and Harry Hole. "
