Police chief Bruno's main job is to keep the life of the picturesque town of St Denis in the heart of France running smoothly. His important tasks include organising village fetes or rugby matches, searching for stray dogs, enforcing parking fines and resolving neighbour disputes. The almost idyllic life of the townspeople is disrupted by a ritual murder. Her investigation is taken up by foreign inspectors from the district town and an unpleasant investigating judge from as far away as Paris. But Bruno, as a local expert, begins to search for the killer on his own. But he will not miss his obligatory multi-course dinners and tennis matches with friends because of this. The narrative is a pleasant counterpoint to the gritty Nordic detective stories, and among other things, provides an almost culinary experience.
