The first book in the Brotherband fantasy series
In Skandia, there is only one way to become a warrior. Boys are selected into groups called 'brotherbands' and must undergo three months of training in seamanship, weapons skills, and battle tactics. Brotherband is pitted against brotherband as they compete in a series of challenges. There can only be one winner.
When Hal Mikkelson, son of a Skandian father and an Araluen mother, becomes the reluctant leader of a brotherband of outcasts, he must rise to the challenge as best he can. While the Heron brotherband may not match the other two groups in strength or numbers, its members might just surprise everyone with their ingenuity, wit, and courage.
